Dario Mitidieri Biography

Biography

I’m an Italian photographer based in London. For over 30 years, I’ve been documenting stories of resilience, loss, joy, and the human experience through photography.
I started my career in 1987, working for publications such as The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent.
In 1989, I covered the Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, capturing one of the most brutal crackdowns in modern history. This work earned me the British Press Photographer of the Year award and confirmed my commitment to photojournalism as a way to document truth and accountability.
In 1994, I published the book Children of Bombay, a year-long project that focused on the lives of street children in what is now Mumbai. Recognised by Photo magazine as one of the most important photography works of the decade, it remains a key moment in my career and a personal reminder of the power of storytelling to drive change.
That same year, I was embedded with the Williams team at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, documenting Ayrton Senna's fatal Formula 1 race.
My photographs were later published in the book L'Ultimo Ayrton.
Over the years, I have covered events such as the aftermath of the Kobe earthquake in Japan, the Northern Ireland conflict, the Iraq War, and the devastation of the Indian Ocean tsunami in Indonesia.
More recently, my project Lost Family Portraits highlighted the devastating impact of war on families, reaching over 700 million viewers worldwide.
My work has been recognised with awards such as the W. Eugene Smith Award in Humanistic Photography, the Visa d’Or at the International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan, and two World Press Photo Awards. These accolades remind me of the importance of shedding light on stories that matter but are often overlooked.
When I’m not working, I’m usually planning my next trip or mentoring new photographers, helping them find their visual voice. For me, photography isn’t just what I do—it’s who I am. It’s a way to connect with people and share their stories with the world.
